Three things not to do to a modern car
- Do not force a coat hanger past the window rubber: it tears the seal and scores the glass.
- Do not break a window unless a person or an animal is at risk, and then ring 112.
- Do not keep pressing the remote of a spare: some cars lock themselves again.

There is a child or a dog shut in the car. Who do I call?
Ring 112 first, straight away, especially on a warm day. Emergency services come faster than anyone else and will break a window if they must. Call a locksmith once nobody is at risk.
Will opening the car set the alarm off or mark the paint?
The alarm may sound when the door opens, and stops once the car is unlocked with its own key. The tools are padded and work through the door seal, so the paint and the glass are left as they were.
The car documents are inside. How do I prove it is mine?
Show your ID, and once the door is open, the vehicle registration papers in the glovebox. The names have to match before you drive away.
Can you make a key if mine is lost rather than locked inside?
